The legend of the phoenix is a universal one.  The tale usually involves a beautiful, one of a kind bird that lives for 500 years.  As it feels the end of it's life getting near, the phoenix begins to build itself a funeral pyre of rare woods on top of the highest mountain.  Then it sits and waits for sunrise.  When the first rays of the morning sun touch the pyre, it bursts into flames, consuming the phoenix in a painful, fiery death.

As the ashes cool, a stirring in the coals is seen, and a newborn phoenix rises reborn from the ashes of the old one.

Stories about this mythical bird can be found in the mythologies of ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, China and among Native Americans.  The first Christians used the story of the phoenix as a metaphor for the resurrection.

We use it as a symbol of being reborn from the ashes of our addiction.  Several analogies can be seen in this story:

  • Fire = Treatment and early recovery

  • Pain = Introspection, the process of taking a look at the kind of person we have become due to our addiction.

  • The newborn phoenix = The recovering addict building a new life out of the ashes of their former addict lifestyle.
